Nightly Reading Homework: If you are absent, there are no excuses!

Reading Homework:

Each night, you must read  a just right book or article of your choice. You must write a brief summary of your readings. You must include the title, the pages read to and from, the total number of pages. Below is an example of an excellent summary of a narrative, fictional text:

John Mirinson

2-11-14

201-8

World War Z, page 17-27=10 pages

In the rising action, Dr. Kuan encountered a young boy who had been infected by the zombie virus. This boy was found in a small, remote village in China. The doctor immediately reported his finding to his partner, Dr. Quay, who looked rattled and fretted when hearing this news.  Dr. Kuan was startled by his partner’s reaction, after all, Dr. Quay was known as someone who rarely became alarmed by medical conditions. Dr. Kuan considered his partner’s reaction and realized just what this infected case meant-this was beyond serious. Dr. Kuan would move his family out of China as soon as possible in hopes to keep them safe from contracting the Zombie virus or worse.

An analysis of an excellent summary:

2. The problem the character encounters

3. The main character’s reaction/actions taken as a result of the problem.

4. The thoughts and actions of the character are written in a chronological order.

5. The summary of a fictional text includes the elements of the story’s plot in your own words only-no personal commentary should be part of a summary.

A very special thanks to J for your excellent summary and to the students who helped identify the elements of an excellent summary!
